Muscle & Strength Talks To Cheerleader, Model And Figure Competitor Samantha Baker
What keeps you motivated?
What keeps me motivated are results. I love seeing the progression my body takes as each month or year passes, and the better it gets rather than vice versa. My fans also keep me extremely motivated. The continued support I receive from so many people that believe in me and write to me saying I can motivate them, help them get in the gym, changed their life, I’m hanging on their wall or goal board…that’s what it’s all about and who wouldn’t be motivated by that?!
Which do you prefer, and why… steady state cardio or HIIT?
I prefer both methods of cardio. I find that if I am drawing closer to a show that normal cardio will be done more as the diet tends to define how much energy you will have for the workouts for the last few weeks (I may do HIIT training in the morning and normal cardio in the pm). I prefer HIIT when I am prepping more for a shoot. I find that it is necessary to change up your cardio just as you would your training routines.
Do you have any gym, muscle building or fitness pet peeves?
One of my biggest pet peeves about weight training is when I hear girls/women say “I don’t want to lift because I don’t want to get big”. THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN. YOU NEED TO WEIGHT TRAIN. They need to understand that this will actually help in the weight loss process as well as build muscle.
How do you prepare meals? Do you cook daily or cook for the week?
I shop one day a week and prep all my meals then. I weigh out all my food, i.e. fish, chicken, etc and pack it up in Tupperware so that I can just heat it up and eat, or grab and go to take with me if I’m running around all day.
What are your favorite cheat meals and foods?
Anybody who knows me knows will say how much I LOVE my pepperoni pizza! That is one of my all-time favorite cheats, also cookies lol! I mean I could go on and on, full pages of cheats that I love but I will say one other will be pretty much anything involving peanut butter 😉
What are some of the biggest training mistakes you’ve made?
Some of the biggest training mistakes I have made are overtraining and overdoing the cardio. It is necessary to give your body time to rest and recoup, regenerate and rest allows your muscles to grow. It’s also important to remember that cardio is a weapon, it is an added benefit to diet and weight training to help you get to where you want to be.
It is very easy to get caught up in focusing around the cardio instead and then you are left doing too much cardio and not seeing enough results. Every once in a while I have to take a step back and reevaluate my routines especially after a show prep where cardio is intensified and increased.
I also used to make the HUGE MISTAKE of not drinking enough water. I still have to remind myself from time to time that I may need more than what I am taking in. I can’t stress enough the importance of water!
