Increase Your Sprint Speed With These 3 Techniques Ft. Vernon Davis

We recently traveled to Washington D.C. to team up with Muscletech athlete and Pro Football Player, Vernon Davis, to bring you some of his All-Pro training secrets.

In this video, Vernon gives us his favorite exercises to improve his sprint speed.

And as a former champ, 2x Pro Bowler, and surefire future Hall of Famer, you’d be wise to incorporate some of these tips into your own training regimen.

1. Hip Flexor Activation

Vernon kicks things off by discussing a hip flexor activation exercise.

Vernon’s learned a lot of things over the course of his career. But the most important thing he’s learned is how to warm his hips up. This exercise is crucial, because not only does it warm up your hips, it also strengthens them.

To set up for this exercise, head over to a cable machine. Hook up a strap attachment, and strap it around your ankle. Then, get in a sprinter’s stance, put your foot back and explode up.

At the same time you’re doing this activation, you also want to make sure you’re working hard to ensure you strengthen your hips.

2. Sled Pulls

The second exercise Vernon uses to increase his sprint speed is sled pulls.

To perform these, take a harness or a rope and hook it up to a sled. Line up about 5-10 yards from the sled, get in a sprinter’s stance, and take off!

The movement should be performed explosively. Imagine when you’re about to take off that you’re super fast and super swift.

3. Incline Treadmill Runs

Lastly, Vernon tackles the incline treadmill run. To set up for these, you want to gradually increase the incline to a challenging, but comfortable height. Then, you increase the speed.

Start anywhere between 6-7mph and then once you get going, perform these doing 15 seconds on the treadmill sprinting and 15 seconds off recovering. Do that for 20 rounds.

Vernon likes to start off by holding weights (he uses 10lbs) to challenge himself even more. This allows him to be swifter once he’s put the weights down.
